Landscape

The Tourniquets d’Astoin are a series of hairpin bends on the D1 departmental road that crosses a rock barrier made of Jurassic limestone north of the Sasse basin. The bends follow an older mule track that was already marked on the 18th-century Cassini map.

Culture and History

The parish church in the upper part of Turriers was rebuilt in 1870 on the site of an earlier chapel and is dedicated to Saint Anthony the Hermit. The Fontaine d’Enchastrayes was restored in 2016; a car park next to it allows hikers to park close to the trails.

Pierre Franco, a 16th-century French surgeon and pioneer in the treatment of hernias and cataracts, was born in Turriers. His birth is dated to between 1500 and 1505.

Trails and Nature

The Bois Noir discovery trail is a marked 4 km circular route with an elevation gain of 150 m and a stated duration of 2 hours 30 minutes. Six stations present topics including gypsum, black marls and robinias, three conifer species, ten forest animals, a beech forest environment, as well as livestock farming, alpine pastures and livestock guardian dogs.

The Bois Noir discovery trail also explores the Col des Sagnes area on the border between Bayons and Turriers in a playful, self-guided and participatory way.

Market and Regional Specialties

The Marché de Turriers weekly market takes place every week with several exhibitors; products on offer include cheese, vegetables, tourtons, meat, honey and jams. In Turriers, regional honey pastries as well as wild boar pâtés and other juniper pâtés from a local artisan butcher are recommended for tasting.
