Nature
A circular hiking route to the Chapelle Saint-Pierre, les Colettes, begins and ends at the car park in the centre of Soleilhas. The route passes through meadows and woodland with Scots pines; the Chapelle Saint-Pierre dates from the late 12th or early 13th century.
The GR4 crosses the Vauplane valley. Vauplane is ideal for relaxing and picnicking, while an information board about the hiking trails stands in the car park of the village hall in the village of Soleilhas.
The return route around the Défens des Colettes passes oratories lining the pilgrims’ path to the Chapelle Saint-Pierre. The route also leads to former gypsum quarries near travertine waterfalls.
The Col Saint-Barnabé lies at an altitude of 1,365 metres between Demandolx and Soleilhas, at the junction with the road to the former Vauplane ski resort.
Culture
The Chapelle Saint-Barnabé was probably built in the 13th century and stands on the pass separating the Verdon and Estéron valleys. Its altar table reuses a funerary stele from the early 1st century.
Notre-Dame-du-Plan was formerly the parish church and is now a chapel. It stands at the foot of the hill crowned by the ruins of a castle settlement; its apse displays Romanesque features.
The parish church of Soleilhas was built in 1668. The traditional buildings in the village were constructed using locally quarried rubble stone made of marl limestone, bonded with lime mortar.
At La Saoume farm, superfatted soaps made from donkey’s and goat’s milk are produced using the cold-process method. By appointment, it is possible to meet the donkeys there.
Winter
The Soleilhas-Vauplane snow area is a family-friendly ski resort that particularly welcomes beginners as well as cross-country skiers, ski tourers and snowshoers.
