History

The Chapelle Saint-Jean was listed as a historic monument by a registration order dated 22 April 1954. An ancient road connecting Riez and Digne ran through Saint-Jeannet. The former village of Saint-Jeannet stood on a hill next to the Chapelle Saint-Jean. The village settlement in the valley was established after the medieval site of Saint-Jean had been abandoned.

Trails and landscape

The La Routo hike begins at a car park on the edge of the RD8 beyond the village of Saint-Jeannet. The route follows a path to the Chapelle Saint-Jean, a Romanesque building from the 14th century that bears witness to the survival of Romanesque art in Haute-Provence.

The Chapelle Saint-Jean can be reached from Saint-Jeannet via a hike with a walking time of one hour for the round trip. From the Chapelle Saint-Jean, there is a remarkable view of Saint-Jeannet and the typical landscape of the Asse valley.

The Ravin des Cardaires connects Saint-Jeannet with the Asse valley. Saint-Jeannet is located on the Route du Temps. In Saint-Jeannet, several old drying sheds for plums or pistoles can be seen. Traces of terraced cultivation remain visible in the landscape of the Asse valley.

Nature

The Chêne Ananas is located on private property. It is a remarkable downy oak (Quercus pubescens) with a swelling, known as a broussin or loupe, on the lower trunk. It stands by the roadside and can be viewed there during a break.

The Chêne Pierre d’Arc stands by the roadside and can be viewed there during a break. In Provençal, the downy oak of the Chêne Pierre d’Arc is called “rouro”.
