Landscape
Roumoules was originally built on a well-positioned slope between the Peyrouvier gorge and the Colostre River. Around two-thirds of the area is used mainly for growing cereals and lavandin; the remaining area consists of wooded land or heathland.
The mountains Le Bougès, Le Pavillon and Le Montdenier, as well as the peak Le Grand Margès, are located in the vicinity of Roumoules.
Getting around
The D952 departmental road connects Roumoules with Riez and Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and provides access towards the Verdon Gorge and Lac de Sainte-Croix.
Culture
The Fontaine de la République is a wall fountain featuring a bust of Marianne and was inaugurated in 1895.
Originally, the Fontaine de la République was supplied by springs via a Gallo-Roman stone conduit that served the former Château.
The church of Roumoules is dedicated to Saint Peter in Chains. It was probably originally the chapel of a monastery or a former priory dependent on Lérins Abbey.
La Croix was erected in 1874 on Villeneuve’s threshing floor at the time, in line of sight of the church and beside the municipal connecting road to Saint Martin and Les Saintes Maries.
La Croix is believed to have been the starting point for processions to bless the harvest or pray for rain.
Traditions
The nativity figures in Roumoules’ Christmas nativity scene are made of porcelain, are 40 to 75 centimetres tall and are dressed in regional costumes. Roumoules’ nativity scene is displayed in the church every year around Christmas.
