Culture and History

At Haut-Montsalier, the oldest parts of the Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens church, also known as Saint-Sauveur, date from the 11th or early 12th century. An embrasure in the apse provides light to the church building.

The former village of Vieux Montsalier, the original site of Montsalier, is now a ruin. It was built on a rocky promontory for better defence. The Bastide du Baou is flanked by two round towers that were converted into dovecotes. It was built on the site of a Gallo-Roman settlement; later, the vanished church of Notre-Dame de la Ferronnade was built there.

Notre-Dame au Plan was built in 1856–1857 to replace an older chapel. The church has a central bay beneath a dome and a bell tower built as a tower above the choir. Today, Notre-Dame au Plan is the parish church of Montsalier.

Townscape

Montsalier can be explored on foot via a few small lanes. The houses feature harmonious ochre-coloured dry-stone façades. The townscape also includes a very large covered washhouse and a fountain.

Getting Around

Vieux Montsalier can be reached via an uphill hiking trail. In Provence, there are opportunities for hiking on roads, tracks and trails.

The quiet roads and dirt tracks of the Plateau d’Albion and Montagne de Lure are particularly suitable for road cycling and mountain biking.

Montsalier can be reached via the RD51 departmental road, which connects Banon with Simiane-la-Rotonde.
