Culture and History

The parish church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine in La Motte-du-Caire was built in 1851 and preserves a bell tower erected in 1785. Inside is a 17th-century “Déposition de croix”, which is classified as a historic monument.

La Motte-du-Caire has been documented under the name “La Mota” since 1168. The name refers to a medieval motte castrale, meaning a fortified hill.

A surviving house with a door frame dated 1682 and a Maltese cross recalls the Trinitarian monastery founded in La Motte-du-Caire in 1498; some of the monastery buildings have disappeared. Rue Casse-Cul is one of the steep lanes in La Motte-du-Caire; between the old houses with traditional façades, the village’s rural and artisanal past becomes visible.

Hiking

The Tour de la Blachère is a five-hour, moderately difficult circular hike. Known as Tour de la Blachère No. 24, it begins in La Motte-du-Caire and covers 14.3 kilometres with 540 metres of elevation gain. The route passes over the Rocher Roux, along the foothills of the Montagne de la Blachère, through the La Gypière valley and, on the return journey, through the Grand Vallon valley.

Children

Randoland provides trail sheets along the route. For La Motte-du-Caire, these are designed as a scavenger hunt and engage children aged 4 to 12 along the route.
