Hiking and Views
The L’Escoubaye hike is 4.6 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 250 metres and takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. It begins in the village of La Bréole and is suitable for all hikers, in other words the whole family. The trail leads to the grounds of the Château de La Bréole and the facilities of the Serre-Ponçon dam, which is considered part of the local heritage of the 20th century. Château de La Bréole is now destroyed. The route also passes close to the Eglise Saint Pierre; its bell tower is approximately 40 metres high.
The L’Escoubaye viewpoint is located at an altitude of 920 metres and offers a view of the Serre-Ponçon dam. For a longer mountain hike, the Clot la Cime circular trail is available: it is 12.8 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 700 metres and has a stated duration of 4 hours 30 minutes. The Clot la Cime hike begins in the village of La Bréole and leads to the highest point of the municipality of La Bréole, at 1,580 metres; it is intended for experienced hikers. The summit of Clot la Cime offers views of the Durance Valley and Lac de Serre-Ponçon.
The circular trail to Lac de Saint Léger begins at the Eglise de Costebelle in La Bréole and is suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
Culture and History
The L’Escoubaye hike leads to the grounds of the Château de La Bréole and the facilities of the Serre-Ponçon dam. A Latin text from 1239 already mentions Château de La Bréole. The hike also leads to the Oratoire de Clot la Cime, where a procession used to take place every Whit Monday.
Near La Bréole is the Chapelle de Saint Léger, which is considered one of the oldest structures in the valley.
Nature
Near La Bréole, there is an observation post at the edge of the forest from which wild ducks can be observed without disturbing them. Near La Bréole, Lac de Saint Léger is also home to a 5-hectare peat bog where water lilies and wild ducks can be found.
