L'Escale: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Lac de l'Escale is a 200-hectare reservoir on the Durance, extending across the municipalities of L'Escale, Château-Arnoux and Volonne. It is home to one of the largest wetlands in Provence. Those choosing L'Escale as a destination may wish to rent a holiday apartment there.

Nature

The Panorama du Lac de l'Escale is a landscape interpretation site belonging to the Géoparc de Haute Provence; a viewpoint above the village offers panoramic views. The Tour du Lac has six discovery areas, observation terraces on the Durance and around twenty information panels.

The peaks of Sommet du Ruth, Crête de Beaucouse, Pic d'Oise and Sommet de Salomon are located around L'Escale.

Trails and History

A botanical trail connects the present-day village with the former medieval village of Vière. The old village of Vière, also known as Vieil Escale, is characterised by fountains, calades and old masonry that reveal its history.

Trail No. 1 – Chabanas is a signposted 5.2-kilometre circular route in L'Escale and starts at the car park by the church in the centre of the village. The Balcons de la Durance route starts at the primary school on Rue des écoles in L'Escale.

The archaeological site of Le Bourguet, one kilometre north of the village of L'Escale, was an important settlement centre during the Gallo-Roman period.

Culture

The Eglise Notre-Dame des Salles church is located in the immediate vicinity of L'Escale. The Citadelle de Sisteron fortress and the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Ganagobie monastery are also located around L'Escale. The historic site of Abbaye Notre-Dame de Lure is located in the wider region surrounding L'Escale.

Food and Drink

A market is held every Friday morning on Place du Bourguet in L'Escale, offering vegetables, cheese and cooked dishes.
