Culture

The Couvent des Cordeliers was founded in the 13th century on the site of a former Benedictine priory. The Couvent houses the Artemisia Museum; its permanent exhibition covers more than 250 m². Throughout the year, the museum offers workshops on edible herbalism, perfumery and the secrets of essential oils.

The Citadelle de Forcalquier is located on the site of the former castle of the Counts of Forcalquier. The Citadelle is home to the Chapelle Notre-Dame de Provence, an octagonal chapel in the Neo-Byzantine style, built in 1875.

Local life

The Monday market in Forcalquier has been documented since the 12th century. It offers, among other things, regional produce, textiles and terracotta goods. The market extends through Forcalquier’s town centre and old town, reaching as far as the artisans’ courtyard.

Nature

Les Mourres consists of unusual limestone formations, some of which resemble faces. The area has been classified by the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence département as a sensitive natural area (Espace Naturel Sensible).

Le lectionnaire enchanté de Forcalquier is a walking tour with 12 information panels made of enamelled lava and tactile drawings. Derrière les portes secrètes de Forcalquier leads through the town’s old doors; twelve resin panels recreate remarkable doors from the old town.
