The history of Chaudon-Norante can be seen in unusual places: the Chapelle Saint-Sébastien, now called Saint-Christophe, stands on the Napoleonic road that led from Chaudon to Barrême. It is also mentioned in a pastoral visit dated October 2, 1712.

History and Culture

The former parish church of Chaudon was called Notre-Dame-du-Plan in 1602. After the older church had become remote and partially dilapidated, a replacement building was constructed in the village. Château Plus Haut was built in the Middle Ages on a hill south of the village to monitor the area from the Asse Valley to the Col du Corobin.

The cultural and discovery trail through Chaudon-Norante starts at the D20 in Chaudon-Norante. It offers anecdotes and testimonies from residents, 360° tours, videos, explanations of the buildings, and numerous illustrations. Chaudon also once had a mill press for producing walnut oil.

Landscape and Trails

The village of Chaudon lies at an altitude of 1,000 m and above; the center of the municipality was moved to Norante, at about 700 m, in a slightly elevated position above the Asse. At the northern edge of the municipality of Chaudon-Norante, the Barre de Chaudon, with elevations between approximately 1,496 and 1,571 m, and the Montagne de Coupe, rising to 1,600 m, shape the landscape.

La Breisse and La Gourrée are peaks in the immediate vicinity of Chaudon. The peaks of Font d'Isnard and Bussière d'Entouart are also located nearby. The Voie Impériale is a multi-day hiking route following in Napoleon's footsteps, marked GR®406.

Culinary Tradition

The historic culinary tradition of Chaudon-Norante and the Asse Valley includes pistoles made from the Perdigone plum variety: the fruit is pitted, peeled, crushed, and dried.
