Landscape and trails

The Allée cavalière has been classified as part of the protected natural sites and monuments since 1951.

It connects the Ferme de Font Robert with the Château.

The Tour du lac de l'Escale begins and ends at the Ferme de Font Robert in Château-Arnoux-Saint-Auban and passes through Château-Arnoux-Saint-Auban, Volonne and L'Escale.

The trail is an easy, 9.6 km family circular route and also a discovery trail.

Two hiking trails lead to the Chapelle Saint-Jean-Baptiste: one starts at the Blachon cemetery in Château-Arnoux, the other at the road to the Saint-Jean reservoirs; both can be combined into a circular route.

Culture and history

In 1783, there were at least eight pottery workshops in Château-Arnoux; one of their specialities was jugs.

The Château de Château-Arnoux was built from 1510 to 1515 by Pierre de Glandeves, the local lord at the time.

Its 84-step spiral staircase has steps that each consist of a single stone. It has been classified as a historic monument since 1969 and can be visited on request during the town hall's opening hours.

For the Chapelle Saint-Jean-Baptiste, Bernar Venet created steel furnishings, including the altar, benches, a cross and stained-glass windows.

The Chapelle Saint-Jean was built in 1668 by four brothers from the Ricard family and has been an important pilgrimage site since its construction.

The religious history of the town also includes the Notre Dame de la Consolation church, dating from 1634. Its bell tower, built in 1666, was rebuilt in 1829.

Saint-Auban airfield

The Aéroclub de Haute-Provence operates a flight school at Saint-Auban airfield, where beginners and those with prior experience can learn to fly.

The Aéroclub de Haute-Provence also offers introductory, sightseeing and discovery flights.

The Centre National de Vol à Voile offers a health trail around Saint-Auban airfield all year round, with views of gliders and the Pénitents.

The Centre National de Vol à Voile welcomes walkers and families, who can take a circuit around the airfield grounds and view the protected site.

Since 2015, the FFPLUM-affiliated association Les Ailes Jarlandines has offered microlight sightseeing flights, introductory flights, pilot training and the opportunity to obtain a microlight licence for three-axis aircraft and/or paramotors at Saint-Auban airfield.

The Air Model Club de Château-Arnoux enables anyone aged 11 and over who is interested to get started in model flying. Models with dual controls are used to learn how to fly.

Getting there

Château-Arnoux-Saint-Auban can be reached by train from Marseille, Lyon and Paris, among other places, via Saint-Auban station.

Route to the Belvedere de Saint-Jean

The route to the Belvedere de Saint-Jean is a signposted 4.5 km trail. It begins at Château-Arnoux town hall or the Renaissance château, passes through the old village and pine forests, and reaches an orientation table overlooking the Durance Valley. The route is closed.
