Geographical Location

Bevons is situated on the left bank at the eastern entrance to the Jabron Valley, at an altitude of 505 metres. The village is located on the D946 departmental road, above the junction with the D553.

Trails and Nature

The “Des Grandes Terres” biodiversity trail begins and ends at the Église Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais in Bevons. The easy circular route is 5.4 kilometres long, includes 245 metres of ascent and takes 1 hour 30 minutes. It passes through the Bevons Massif, offers views of the Jabron and Buëch valleys, and showcases local flora typical of Haute-Provence.

The Tour de Peydiou circular route begins in Bevons, in the hamlet of Les Basties, and is accessible year-round. From the Tour de Peydiou, the Pas de l’Essaillon offers views of the Buëch Valley, the Dévoluy and the Écrins.

Culture and History

The village of Bevons is named after Saint-Bevons (940–986), who defeated the Saracens at the rock later known as Pierre Impie. On a rock slab a few metres to the left of the Pas de l’Essaillon passage, inscriptions engraved in the stone can be seen; they were deciphered a few years ago.

In 1964, the remains of a 4.50-metre-high funerary mausoleum containing urns, oil lamps, jewellery and coins were accidentally uncovered.

During geological research carried out between 1984 and 1986, bones were discovered near the Mollard ridge below the Rocher du Turc in the municipality of Bevons. They were identified as the remains of a theropod dinosaur from the Cretaceous period, approximately 100 million years ago.
