The Abbey of Ligugé was founded in 361 by Saint Martin and is considered the oldest abbey in the Western world still inhabited by monks. The abbey is also home to the Scofa, a soft honey-and-almond cake made according to a unique recipe and available to sample as a local speciality.

Culture

The Chemin de Ligugé: Saint-Martin is designated as a Cultural Route of the Council of Europe and is also a 170-kilometre hiking trail from Candes-Saint-Martin to Ligugé. The GR 655 trail – Poitiers / Lusignan leads to Ligugé via a detour to the Abbaye Saint-Martin de Ligugé; this monastery is located in the immediate vicinity of Ligugé, where visitors can see an exhibition of enamel works created by the monks.

Guided tours of the centre of Ligugé cover the local cultural heritage from the Gallo-Roman period to the present day.

Activities

The Parc Aventure de la Vallée des Légendes at the Domaine de Givray in Ligugé offers nine high-ropes courses with nets, monkey bridges and zip lines. The educational nature trail at the Filature is also one of the activities in Ligugé.
