Those considering Lavausseau for their travel plans may wish to rent a holiday apartment.
Culture
The Church of Saint-Rémi in Lavausseau features both traditional and more modern stained-glass windows. Its central stained-glass window depicts Saint Remigius and was donated by the Bishop of Poitiers in 1871.
The Maison des Templiers at 8 Grand’rue in the centre of Lavausseau dates back to the time of the Knights Templar. The stone-carved coats of arms of the commandery have been preserved above its door.
The preserved tanning pits are included in the guided tour of the Cité des Tanneurs, but are currently not specifically developed for visitors.
History
The former commandery of the Order of the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem in Lavausseau was built as a fortress in the 12th century. A carved fireplace from the former dormitory of the commandery’s monks is listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments.
Tanning was already carried out early on along the banks of the Boivre near Lavausseau; the first written evidence of this activity dates from 1600.
