Marillac-Le-Franc: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Marillac-le-Franc is associated with the Les Pradelles archaeological site, where Neanderthals used a deep karst cavity at least 60,000 years ago, particularly to butcher and prepare reindeer meat.

History

The present-day Église Saint-Didier was built in the 12th century to replace an earlier 11th-century church and has been protected as a historic monument since 1925.

The present cemetery was moved east of the town centre around 1820 and enclosed by a wall in 1826. Some of the cemetery’s graves are particularly noteworthy for their iconography.

The privately owned Logis de Marillac is a 17th-century manor house. It stands on the site of a medieval castle dating from the 15th century; this castle was the seat of a fief dependent on the Barony of Montbron.

In the 19th century, Marillac-le-Franc even supplied La Rochefoucauld with most of its food, including poultry, vegetables, sheep’s cheese, rabbits and fruit.

Nature

The Les Pradelles archaeological site lies north of the town centre in an aven measuring 15 metres in diameter.

Because of Marillac-le-Franc’s karst limestone landscape, the Ligonne regularly disappears into sinkholes or avens, where it becomes an underground river.

Marillac-le-Franc has 21 kilometres of PR/GRP trails forming part of a nationally signposted route network, as well as additional local paths maintained by the municipality.

Culture

The statue of the Homme de Marillac stands south of the church in the square on the site of a former watering place for livestock and is made of limestone. It was created by the sculptor Marc Deligny in 2003.

The Ligonne once powered four grain mills in Marillac-le-Franc: the mills of Chabrou, Puybrunet, Grand Champ and Rizotte.

The former mills on the Ligonne operated with overshot water wheels whose watertight bucket compartments were known as “cassottes”.
