Culture and History
Today, only the eastern wall of the commandery remains; a distinctive group of three openings gives it its recognizable form. The Commanderie des Templiers appears to have been built in the second half of the 12th century at the same time as the chapel. The former chapel is representative of early buildings belonging to the religious military orders.
Notable species such as the Short-toed Snake Eagle and Jaubert's Stinkweed can also be found in the Forêt de la Boixe. Archaeological remains, including tumuli and the Pierre du Sacrifice, characterize the landscape of the Forêt de la Boixe.
Nature
The Sentier de la Commanderie is 7 km long and begins at the Mairie, Place de la Mairie, 16230 Maine-de-Boixe. The trail passes the Maison du Commandeur, which is associated with the former Templar order. From the trail, the remains of the Chapelle des Templiers can be seen on the right a few hundred metres away.
Things to Do
The houses à balet along the route have stone staircases leading to the living quarters, as well as canopies protecting their entrances. The Église Saint-Thomas, built in 1173, is also part of the historic village setting. The Sentier de la Commanderie runs between cultivated areas and woodland towards Hameau du Courreau.
