Chassenon: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Gallo-Roman remains of Cassinomagus are located in an archaeological park within the municipality of Chassenon. The sanctuary of Cassinomagus is estimated to have covered seven hectares and included a 30-metre-high temple as well as a sacred grove; it was one of the largest sanctuaries in Roman Gaul.

Culture

Heritage protection covers the entire “église Saint-Jean Baptiste” in Chassenon, including the sacristy. It was listed by decree dated 8 February 2019.

Every summer, archaeologists welcome visitors to the excavation sites in Chassenon to explain the results of their research. Accessibility at the archaeological park has also been partially adapted: the reception area and exhibition are wheelchair accessible, but the baths are not fully accessible. The staff can also suggest an adapted tour.

Experiences

The “Labyrinthe des dieux” at Cassinomagus offers a one-hour puzzle and games trail exploring mythology. The trail is open from May to the beginning of October.

Nature

The impactites of the Rochechouart-Chassenon astrobleme are visible in the Gallo-Roman baths of Chassenon. The Rochechouart-Chassenon astrobleme nature reserve extends across five municipalities in the Haute-Vienne and Charente départements.

The recommended route to Cassinomagus is via National Route 141 between Angoulême and Limoges. At the Chabanais exit, follow the signs to the archaeological park.
