The Église Saint-Sulpice in Challignac is a Romanesque church built between the 12th and 13th centuries. Its interior capitals are decorated with unusual figures and animals: they include fighting dogs, a nursing sow, a cow and a human head emerging from a snail shell.

Culture and History
A 13th-century portal has been preserved on the western side of the Église Saint-Sulpice. The church is a surviving testimony to the events of the Hundred Years’ War and suffered severe damage during the war. It was renovated in the 15th century.
In the 16th century, defensive modifications were added to the Église Saint-Sulpice for fortification purposes. A refuge was integrated into its vault; the church also has loopholes in its buttresses, bays and bell tower.
The furnishings include a bell dating from 1646, which has been protected since 1944 as an object with “Monument historique” status. The Église Saint-Sulpice is freely accessible every day from 1 January to 31 December, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
