Culture and History

The Église Saint-Pierre et Sainte-Radegonde was listed as a Monument historique by decree of 4 December 1995. The church was built at the end of the 12th or in the 13th century; its two chapels, bell tower, and façade were built in the first half of the 16th century. The bell dating from the 16th century has been classified as a Monument historique since 1943.

The Château de Bonnes stands on the foundations of a medieval castle that served as the seat of the Lambert family from the 11th to the 16th century. After the Hundred Years’ War, the Château de Bonnes was almost entirely rebuilt in the Renaissance style. It is generally open for visits from 20 July to 31 August.

Nature

The Moulin de Bonnes has been a protected architectural and natural site since 1943. It includes diversion channels intended for fish migration.

The Vallée de la Dronne Natura 2000 site in Bonnes covers 173.8 ha of natural habitats of European interest.

Things to Do

The “Circuit du Bois du Roi” walking route runs between Bonnes and Les Essards through forests and the Charente countryside. Along this route, historical commentary and village anecdotes are available via downloadable audio-guide tracks or an MP3 player available from Bonnes Town Hall.

The “Circuit de la fontaine du loup” route passes through Bonnes along the Dronne River; Bonnes lies between Aubeterre-sur-Dronne and Saint-Aulaye. The banks of the Dronne along this route serve as an LPO bird protection refuge. Historical commentary and village anecdotes for the route are available via an MP3 player obtainable from Bonnes Town Hall or the Pôle du Sud Charente tourist office.
