Culture and history
The Château de Barbezieux was rebuilt around 1460 on the orders of Marguerite de La Rochefoucauld, Lady of Barbezieux and Montendre, and has been classified as a historic monument since 1913. The tourist office offers guided tours of the château by prior reservation.

The historic centre of Barbezieux is characterised by remarkably uniform architecture, most of which dates from the 18th century. The Église Saint-Mathias was built in the 12th century and remodelled several times up to the 19th century. The Château de Barbezieux offers a multidisciplinary cultural season featuring theatre, dance, comedy, object and puppet theatre, and music; there are also opportunities to meet and exchange with the artists. The church houses two large paintings signed “Vincent 1786”: one depicts the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, while the other shows Christ as the healer of the sick. It also features stained-glass windows and organs.
Local character
The Poule de Barbezieux, a black breed of chicken with white earlobes, is part of the area’s local character. It is considered the largest French chicken breed, and its meat is regarded as particularly fine.
Activities
The “Le ticket perdu du théâtre fantôme” escape game at the Barbezieux theatre combines history and puzzles. It takes place during the school holidays, lasts one hour and is suitable for participants aged eight and over.
The “Barbezieux, la créative!” Tèrra-Aventura activity is a free, family-friendly geocaching treasure hunt. Participants use the Tèrra-Aventura app or a GPS device to solve puzzles and find the treasure.
Landscape and trails
The “Galope Chopine” greenway stretches for 22 kilometres from Barbezieux to Chantillac and passes through forests, valleys, vineyards and typical villages of the Charentes region. Along the route, information panels provide details about the history of the former railway line.
The “Circuit découverte 9B” circular route is a hilly cycling tour that runs above the Beau and Gabout valleys, alternating between forests, vineyards and cultivated land.
