Since 14 November 2024, the National Nature Reserve of the Bay and Marais d’Yves has covered an area of 1,206 hectares. It includes the Baie d’Yves, the beaches, and the marshland areas located to the north and south of the Falaise d’Yves.

The Marais d’Yves Nature Reserve comprises muddy tidal flats, dry dunes, ponds that are temporarily more or less brackish, marshland and reed beds, wet meadows, woodland and shrubland. Its rich diversity of species includes at least 574 species of flowering plants.

The National Nature Reserve of the Bay and Marais d’Yves is home to small and large waders along the shore, as well as ducks in winter; in spring, black-winged stilts and pied avocets breed there, while marsh harriers are present year-round. The area is not freely accessible like a developed visitor site; the LPO offers guided tours throughout the year on specified dates. The guided excursions in the National Nature Reserve of the Bay and Marais d’Yves are adapted to various disabilities.

Culture

The Priory of Saint-Etienne d’Yves already existed in the 12th century; it was demolished and rebuilt in the 19th century.

Sophie Blanchard was born on 24 March 1778 in Trois-Canons in the municipality of Yves. She was the first woman to pursue a career as an aeronaut.

Les Boucholeurs is one of the five hamlets of the municipality of Yves and is also located within the territory of Châtelaillon-Plage; oyster farming and mussel farming are important activities there.

Saveurs Nacrées welcomes groups by reservation for an educational tasting session with 30 minutes to one hour of explanations about oyster farming, followed by a tasting or a meal on site.

Getting Around

La Rotonde des Boucholeurs is a panoramic belvedere on the boundary between Châtelaillon-Plage and Yves, situated on a 10-metre-high elevated promenade.

The “Châtelaillon-Plage – Boucle Boucholeurs” circular hiking route is 3.04 km long, takes 47 minutes, and according to the information provided begins at the Belvédère des Bouchôleurs in 17340 Yves.
