Sonnac: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Saint-Étienne church in Sonnac was built between the 11th and 12th centuries in the Romanesque style. Its façade features capitals decorated with figures of people and animals. In the left transept, a very large canvas painting depicts heaven, earth and hell. The altar dates from the 18th century and is made mostly of gilded wood; it has been protected as a historic monument since 1984. The Saint-Étienne church in Sonnac also has stained-glass windows dating from the late 19th to the early 20th century.

Nature

The Soloire Valley in Sonnac is part of the Vallée de la Charente between Angoulême and Cognac Natura 2000 site. The Briou, a tributary of the Antenne, flows through Sonnac and belongs to the Vallée de l’Antenne Natura 2000 site. In the wider regional area, the Vallée de la Charente between Angoulême and Cognac Natura 2000 site also includes, among others, the Soloire tributary.

History

Henri Coudreau was born in Sonnac in 1859 and later worked as an explorer and geography teacher. In 1881, he was appointed to Cayenne, where he began his work as an explorer in French Guiana.

A feudal castle called Cornefou was built around the year 1000 in the municipality of Sonnac, on the border with Louzignac. The traces of Cornefou that were still preserved in 2000 included the bases of the columns of the entrance portal and a very large, deep well.
