Culture and History

In the forest of Saint-Maigrin stands a restored 19th-century brick kiln; next to it are the ruins of a building that presumably served the brick workers.

The Église Saint-Paul was completely rebuilt at the beginning of the 19th century on its former site and retains short buttresses from the 15th century. At the front of the nave, it has a late-19th-century bell tower whose base forms an open porch.

The Moulin de Narrat is a functioning water mill with origins dating back to the late 16th century and includes a small ecomuseum. The mill also produces flour and walnut oil.

The private Château de Saint-Maigrin is considered a Gothic Revival château dating from the 13th century and is visible from Départemental Road 152 in the direction of Baignes-Sainte-Radegonde.

Wine and Distilleries

The Distillerie d'eaux-de-vie de Cognac Martell in the hamlet of Foireau in Saint-Maigrin was founded around 1893 on the site of an older water mill. The Coteaux de Passignac continue to be used for winegrowing to this day. The winegrowers of Saint-Maigrin have been working there for centuries to produce Cognac and to maintain its quality and reputation.

The Roux family bought an estate in Saint-Maigrin in 1930 and established its first distillery there; this developed into the present-day Domaine Castel-Sablons. It is a family-run business in the canton of Archiac in the Charente-Maritime département, built on the experience of several generations of winegrowers and distillers.

Domaine de Montizeau offers tours of its cellars and distillery. Cognac, Pineau and local wines are produced there; tastings as well as guided group and individual tours can be arranged on request through the boutique in Jonzac.
