The Marais des Landes is a natural area classified as a ZNIEFF, covering approximately 800 hectares, which Saint-Loup shares with Chantemerle-sur-la-Soie, Annezay and Landes. The Trézence flows through the Marais de Saint-Loup, which is also known as the Marais des Landes. Around 193 bird species have been observed in Saint-Loup, mainly in the Marais des Landes during migration stopovers.
Several orchid species grow in the Marais de Saint-Loup, including the Saint-Loup Ophrys. The canals of the Marais de Saint-Loup are considered a habitat for hundreds of fish, including pike, European perch, European eels and roach. The 1,200-hectare Vallée de la Trézence in the wider area around Saint-Loup encompasses wetlands, limestone slopes and bocage meadows.
Saint-Loup-de-Saintonge is one of the municipalities included in the Vallée de la Trézence of Echappées Nature.
Cycling and Hiking
The Grav'Val de Trézence starts in Saint-Loup. This 80 km gravel cycling route is also open to mountain bikers. It also includes an approximately 12 km hiking route that starts from the same location. The loop offers viewpoints over the valleys of the Trézence, the Soie and the Bibot.
