Grand-Village-Plage lies between the ocean, salt marshes and a large pine forest. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Grand-Village-Plage can focus their accommodation search on this location.

Culture and History

Le Port des Salines is a site in the municipality of Grand-Village-Plage that has been awarded the “Echappées Nature” distinction. An ecomuseum, guided tours of the salt marshes and boat trips convey the history of salt production on Oléron and the knowledge of the salt workers.

The Maison éco-paysanne combines a traditional farm with an interpretation centre on ecological living from the past into the future. It offers guided tours of the site and the old village centre of Le Grand-Village-Plage.

The events, workshops and performances at the Maison éco-paysanne are aimed at children and adults.

The 18th-century Saint-Joseph Chapel preserves frescoes depicting scenes from everyday life and views of the municipality. To visit the chapel, contact the tourist office. In the village centre, winding lanes lead to Quéreux covered with hollyhocks.

Nature

The municipality’s paths lead through the state forest to the ocean on foot or by bicycle. La Giraudière Beach is a three-kilometre-long fine-sand beach accessible on foot, by bicycle or, in summer, by the small tourist train. The Écossais car park provides access to Plage des Allassins; from there, a 1.5-kilometre path leads through the forest and dunes to the beach on foot or by bicycle.

Activities

The municipality can be explored on foot or by bicycle via cycle paths, hiking trails and fitness trails. Surfing, kitesurfing and land sailing are practised all year round at La Giraudière Beach. Plage des Allassins is suitable for surfing and other board and gliding sports.

During the “Rendez-vous avec le saunier” activity, the salt worker explains how fleur de sel and coarse salt are harvested after a tour of the salt works.
