Bourcefranc-Le-Chapus: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Fort Louvois was built from 1691 to 1694 according to Vauban’s plans. At low tide, the fort can be reached on foot via a 400-metre-long paved causeway; at high tide, it can be reached by boat from the port of Chapus in 10 minutes. Culture and history

The Vieux Chapus district has existed since the 15th century. The names of the streets in the district reflect its maritime past. Individual, self-guided visits to Vieux Chapus are possible at any time.

The Moulin de la Plataine is a remarkably well-preserved windmill dating from 1650. Guided tours of the Moulin de la Plataine are available in July, August and during the European Heritage Days in September.

The PILUCHE boat was restored in 2010 and has taken part in regional nautical events ever since.

Nature

The Natura 2000 site “marais de Brouage (et marais nord d’Oléron)” is designated as Special Area of Conservation FR 5400431 and extends partly across the municipality of Bourcefranc-le-Chapus.

The Daire oyster-farming and nature area includes settling basins, rows of wooden huts on stilts, numerous chalands and pinasses, oyster beds and fishponds.

Getting around

The “Plongée dans le monde maritime” circular trail runs between oyster huts and the former fishing village of Bourcefranc-Le Chapus.
