Blanzay-sur-Boutonne is situated on the Boutonne and combines a long local history with distinctive buildings. The most important monument to discover in the municipality is the Église Saint-André de Blanzay sur Boutonne. Its west façade is particularly noteworthy; since 1949, the church has been protected as a historic monument.

The cultural landscape also includes the Logis de Chauvin, a simple and harmonious architectural ensemble from the 17th and 18th centuries in the lowlands of the Boutonne Valley. It comprises the residential building and a dovecote.

A local legend passed down for several centuries tells that a commoner, who is said to have once owned around one third of the village, drank water from the river flowing through the municipality after consuming too much “Gâteau” and eventually became “Encrevé”, according to the local dialect of the Blanzéerois. The story is expressly presented as a traditional tale.

In addition, the Natura 2000 site “Massif forestier de Chizé-Aulnay” protects habitats covering 3 % of the municipal area of Blanzay-sur-Boutonne; its total area is 17,327 hectares.

Cycle Routes

Near Blanzay-sur-Boutonne, visitors can switch between the “Rives de Boutonne” route and the connection to the local “Grands Chemins” loop. The “Rives de Boutonne” route runs for 123 kilometres from Dampierre-sur-Boutonne to Cabariot and follows small roads and rural paths near the water.

The “Les Grands Chemins” route offers shorter circuits of 22.7 kilometres and 30.2 kilometres. As a cycling route, it passes through 8 municipalities and is at least 45 kilometres long.
