Nature
Benon’s land cover is characterised by extensive forests and near-natural habitats. The Forêt de Benon covers 3,300 hectares. It is predominantly a deciduous forest, mainly characterised by downy oaks; ash and maple trees are also found there.
The part of the Forêt de Benon belonging to the département is protected as a wildlife and hunting reserve and designated as an Espace Naturel Sensible.
Paths and facilities
In the 1990s, a 130-hectare recreational area and an arboretum were created in the Forêt de Benon. The Balade forestière à Benon, a 4.5-kilometre shaded hiking trail, runs through the forest. The Promenade des Pins hiking trail runs for almost two kilometres through the Forêt de Benon.
Culture
The Église Saint-Pierre contains a retable and a carved wooden tabernacle. The Abbaye de La Grâce-Dieu, a historic site, is located in the immediate vicinity of Benon. The Château de Sazay, a castle, is also located in the area around Benon.
Sightseeing
Access to the Tour des Six Sots is free; however, it can only be viewed from the outside.
Surroundings
In the wider regional surroundings of Benon, the Anciennne église Saint-Étienne is a ruin. Also located in the wider regional area are the Abbaye de Maillezais, a historic site, La Plage d’Aytré, a beach, Plage des Minimes, a beach, Le Chay, a cape, and the Aquarium de la Rochelle, a zoo.
