Aujac: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Aujac combines a diverse landscape with a Romanesque church, historical traces and a clearly described hiking route. The various facets of the village are reflected both in the landscape and in its local cultural and historical references.
Culture and History
The Église Saint-Martin is a Romanesque church dating from the 12th century, which was rebuilt several times after being damaged during Arab invasions. During work on the church, an artistically decorated entrance portal was uncovered. With the exception of the north portal, which is classified as a historic monument, the Église Saint-Martin has been listed as a historic monument by decree of 2 February 2006.
Another historical reference reaches into the more recent past: On 20 January 1945, a German mail plane crashed in Aujac after an engine failure and colliding with several trees.
Landscape
The landscape of Aujac consists of 77.7 % Charentais wine-growing areas and 22.3 % western plains. The municipality contains 31.10 ha of wetlands; it also includes around 10.9 km of watercourses. The type 2 ZNIEFF area “Vallée de l’Antenne” covers 5.7 % of the area of the municipality of Aujac.
A single natural feature is also recorded: a tree in the municipality of Aujac is listed in the inventory of remarkable trees of Poitou-Charentes.
For a stay in Aujac, the decision to rent a holiday apartment is a personal matter of travel planning.
Hiking
The “Sur les chemins d’Aujac” hiking route is 9.53 km long, easy, returns to the starting point and takes 2 hours 45 minutes. Along the route are the Église Saint-Martin and the Moulin Grelat.
On the route, the trail follows the Auriou through woodland and along the edge of agricultural plots to the source of the watercourse called the Gour. The roads and paths used on the hiking route are accessible year-round and well maintained.
