In the Marais de Coux, there is a guided circular trail with information boards across flat, grassy terrain. The interpretive trail in the Marais de Coux covers the history of the marsh, the management of seawater flow, and the local flora and fauna.
The Coux oyster port is one of Arvert’s two oyster ports. Arvert became known as the “Pays des Claires” when salt ponds were gradually converted into ponds for maturing oysters, known as “claires”.
Food and Drink
The Domaine des Claires offers tours of its vineyard, cellars and distillery. Tastings include white, rosé and red wine, as well as Pineau and Cognac.
The markets are also part of the local offering: in Arvert, markets focusing on local producers are held on Wednesday and Saturday mornings; an organic market takes place every Friday afternoon throughout the year.
History
The present-day Protestant temple in Arvert was built in 1834 in the garden of the Mairie school. Its side door is located in a side wall; this unusual arrangement is reminiscent of former houses of worship.
The port of La Grève à Duret was established in the 19th century after the port of La Jument had silted up. In September 1888, Émile Zola organised an outing there with an oyster tasting, during which the participants sat at tables beside the claires.
The Moulin du Cabouci windmill in Arvert has a crenellated top because it served as a German observation post with a gun during the Second World War. The ensemble of the temple and town hall in Arvert was built from stones taken from former local houses and completed in 1868.
