History

The Battle of Montépilloy took place on 15 August 1429 between the royal army commanded by Charles VII and Joan of Arc and the English troops of the Duke of Bedford. The privately owned Château de Montépilloy was built around 1150 by Gui IV Le Bouteiller de Senlis. Today, it is open to the public for visits on 40 days a year; groups can visit it upon request.

Culture

The present-day Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste was built around 1190 and was the seat of a small parish priory dependent on Hérivaux Abbey. It consists of four square bays with ribbed vaults, reaching a height of 9 m. The large choir windows and the present-day vaults were built in the 16th century in the Flamboyant Gothic style. The portal is distinguished by delicate columns with decreasing diameters.

In Montépilloy, memorial plaques commemorate Joan of Arc’s passage through the village in 1429. Other historical traces include triangular medieval boundary stones, sculpted and dated to 1543–1545. Boundary stones of the Princes of Condé in Montépilloy are engraved with a fleur-de-lis.

The watering trough on the road from Montépilloy to Fourcheret serves as a habitat for the midwife toad (Alytes obstetricans). The circular route through Montépilloy follows a wooded path that bypasses the village centre. It also leads to a ridge and offers views of the area’s exceptional landscapes.
