Culture

The Church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine was built between 1498 and 1516. It is distinguished by its porch, vaults, altarpiece, and two chapels arranged one above the other. The altarpiece was classified as a protected monument by a ministerial decree of 14 June 1893.

The Church of Saint-Martin was built between 1500 and 1545. It includes a 37-meter-high tower dating from 1525 to 1530. The choir contains 18th-century wood paneling depicting Saint Sebastian, Saint Catherine, musical instruments, and foliage.

A tower is all that remains of the medieval fortress of Maignelay.

Local landmarks

The Sainte-Marie-Madeleine Chapel stands on the outskirts of Maignelay-Montigny, on the road toward Tricot. It was added to the inventory of historic monuments in 1922. Its paved approach is bordered by low walls and closed off by a gate.

The Calvaire du Bouquet de l'Eglise is located at the junction of Rue de la Madeleine and Rue Louis Henry. It symbolizes the former union of the two parishes of Maignelay-Montigny.

Opposite the chapel stands a small fountain, also dedicated to Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, which collected water from the springs of Coivrel.

Landscape

Maignelay-Montigny extends across a wide, generally flat plain with agricultural land interspersed with numerous forests.

Trails and traditions

The “Les ducs d’Halluin” hiking trail is 24 kilometers long. Its signage is linked to the coat of arms of the Dukes of Halluin. In the area around Maignelay-Montigny, the trail connects the church of Ravenel, the two churches of Maignelay and Montigny, and the Abbey of Saint-Martin-Aux-Bois.

The court in Maignelay historically used for jeu de paume is still used by the local paume society.
