Nature
The River Le Thérain runs through Hondainville from west to east. The ZNIEFF in the Thérain Valley covers 128.4 hectares and extends across Hondainville, Heilles and Saint-Félix. This area includes several ponds created by earlier alluvial extraction, where wetland vegetation subsequently became established naturally. The aquatic habitats provide suitable nesting sites for numerous waterbird species.
Culture
The Jardins philosophiques de Lombardie are extensive, architecturally designed philosophical gardens featuring topiary hornbeams, yews and boxwood, an avenue of lime trees, ponds, streams, canals, a waterfall and two natural areas in the marshland. They can only be visited as part of guided tours; several tours take place each year from April to December, particularly during the “Rendez-vous aux jardins” events in June and the “Journées du Patrimoine” in September.
The washhouse built in 1866 stands beside the Le Lombardie stream near the church. Another washhouse at the entrance to the village, opposite the Saint-Antoine Chapel, was completely rebuilt in 2002.
The Church of Saint-Aignan has a single-nave body, a non-vaulted Romanesque structure dating from the third quarter of the 12th century; two side chapels were added in the 15th or 16th century. In 1980, the church was listed as a protected historic monument.
