The Château de Compiègne was built under Louis XV and Louis XVI and redesigned under Napoléon I and Napoléon III. At the palace, visitors can see the apartments of the emperor and empress. It is also home to the Musée national de la Voiture et du Tourisme, which has a significant collection of horse-drawn vehicles and automobiles from their origins through to the First World War.

The Mémorial de l’internement et de la déportation was established in 2008 on the site of the former Royallieu camp in Compiègne. The Musée de la Figurine has a collection of almost 155,000 pieces, around 45,000 of which are on display. Dioramas depict history there from the Trojan War to the Norman bocage in June 1944.

The Théâtre Impérial is also part of the city’s cultural history: its construction began in 1867 at the request of Napoléon III. After a long period of disuse, the Théâtre Impérial was inaugurated in 1991. Today, it presents recitals, chamber music, symphonic music, vocal music and music theatre.

The four museums are only a few minutes’ walk from one another. The museums are approximately a ten-minute walk from Compiègne railway station.

In the immediate vicinity of Compiègne is the Palais de Compiègne, a vanished Merovingian palace from the early Middle Ages. Also nearby are the Château de Compiègne, a palace, the Artothèque de Compiègne, a museum, and the Abbaye Saint-Corneille-et-Saint-Cyprien, a historic site.
