History

In the early Middle Ages, three religious institutions in Sallertaine provided important economic impetus to salt extraction and the salt trade. The curved stone structure at Rairé may have been built at the end of the Bronze Age, around 1000 to 700 BC.

The Jardin de Vaulieu illustrates Sallertaine's geological development; the municipality was built on a limestone island and was formerly surrounded by salt marshes.

Île de Bouin is an island in the vicinity of Sallertaine. Further afield in the region are the beaches of Plage de la Boutinardière, Plage de la Birochère and Plage de la Source.
