Culture

The village is characterised by venelles, meaning narrow traditional lanes. The village is also home to a 16th-century church situated among lime trees. It houses seven stained-glass windows depicting scenes from the life of Saint Radegund, created in the 1940s by Maurice Bordereau from Angers. The church also contains a statue of Saint Radegund dating from 1684.

History

The Moulin Neuf is the last surviving testament to the village’s milling tradition. Several windmills were operated as part of this tradition until the 19th century.

According to tradition, nuns from the Sainte-Croix Abbey in Poitiers, fleeing the invasions on the coast of Lower Poitou, founded a priory dedicated to Saint Radegund. It stood on the site of today’s town hall and existed until the French Revolution.

The former Logis de la Prée Mizotière is used by the services of the Baie de l’Aiguillon National Nature Reserve.

At the Prée Mizotière site, 10 hectares were converted into an environmental area by depoldering. At Prée Mizotière, wet depressions were created across approximately 15 hectares to restore salt-affected meadows and maritime habitats.

Landscape

The Canal du Clain is one of the oldest canals still in operation today. It was built at the end of the 12th century, restored in the middle of the 17th century and is more than 12.5 kilometres long.

Along its entire route, the Canal du Clain is flanked by two dykes, also known as “bots”, on which a path or road runs.
