Maillezais: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

In Maillezais, the Abbaye de Maillezais tells a story spanning more than 1,000 years of history. The site was a Benedictine abbey, a bishopric and a Protestant fortress. During the summer season, the Abbaye de Maillezais also offers guided tours, performances and musical events.

Culture

The Église Saint-Nicolas in Maillezais was classified as a historic monument on 31 December 1840. In the immediate vicinity of Maillezais are the Abbaye de Maillezais as a historic site and the Église Saint-Nicolas as a church. The surrounding area also includes the Abbaye Saint-Vincent as a historic site and the Château de Sazay as a château.

Landscape

The centre of Maillezais lies at the transition to the Marais Poitevin; to the west, the marsh comes particularly close to the town. The Embarcadère de l’Abbaye is located at the Grand Port de Maillezais, directly at the foot of the Abbaye de Maillezais in the classified area of the Marais poitevin. From the Embarcadère de l’Abbaye, visitors can explore the Marais Poitevin by boat or canoe, with a boatman or on their own.

Trails

The Les Levées walking trail begins at the church square in Maillezais and passes through the two major landscape areas of the Marais Poitevin, the wet marsh and the drained marsh, by the Aqueduc de Maillé and in front of the Abbaye Saint Pierre de Maillezais. Les Levées is marked in yellow and runs clockwise; there are car parks and toilets at the starting point on the church square.

The Sentier de Pierre et d’Eau cultural trail in Maillezais is 2 km long and is presented on 11 information panels. It leads through the streets of the village of Maillezais and is designed as an approximately one-hour discovery walk. The Sentier de Pierre et d’Eau is accessible to everyone and is signposted along the route with ground markings.
