The Vieux Château in La Mothe-Achard was built in 1773 on the site of an earlier castle that had been fortified in the 11th and 12th centuries.

Their façade bears the coat of arms and motto of the former commune of La Mothe-Achard: “Ex Virtute Nobilitas”. The market halls have stood in the town’s central square since the Middle Ages.
The Church of Saint-Jacques survived the fire of 1794 during the Vendée Wars and was used at that time as an ammunition depot and stable.
