Culture and History

The Château de Sablé was rebuilt in the 18th century by Jean-Baptiste Colbert de Torcy. The Notre-Dame church contains an exceptional stained-glass window from the late 15th century, which is classified as a “Monument historique”.

A guided walking tour of the town reveals the cultural heritage of Sablé-sur-Sarthe in the town centre. It includes the Château de Sablé, a church and medieval houses, and also covers the history of shipping and Sablé’s industrial past. The Sablé-sur-Sarthe SNCF railway station is 1 km from the starting point of the tour.

The small “A l’Homme Volant” museum is located in a half-timbered house in the historic centre. It is dedicated to the conquest of the air. The Festival de Sablé is also part of the town’s cultural profile: it is a prime example of the rediscovery of music on historical instruments and has supported the creation of most of the Baroque ensembles that have joined this initiative for more than 40 years.

Experiences on the Water

Le Sablésien offers lunch cruises lasting 3, 5 or 7 hours, 1.5-hour sightseeing cruises without a meal, and 1.5-hour aperitif cruises. At Anjou Navigation, visitors can hire a boat without needing a licence and explore the Sarthe.

La Sablésienne offers a guided tour of the museum and workshop, showing the various stages in the production of Sablés, as well as a film screening and a tasting of biscuits and other treats. The Petit Sablé takes its name from the town of Sablé-sur-Sarthe.

The Écomusée du Marbre traces the history of the marble industry in the Sablé-sur-Sarthe region from the 17th to the 20th century.
