The Abbaye de Champagne was founded in 1188 on the initiative of Foulques Riboul, the lord of Assé. He brought monks from Savigny Abbey, which had joined the Cistercian order in 1147. The west wing of the Abbaye de Champagne includes a cellar considered the only surviving remnant of the original 12th-century abbey. The Abbaye de Champagne rents out rooms with sleeping facilities as well as holiday cottages for weddings, family gatherings, birthdays and seminars.

Culture and History

The Château de Courmenant dates back to the 12th century. A water mill is directly attached to the Château de Courmenant, while its keep overlooks the fields and the river.

The Chapelle Saint-Jacques probably dates back to the 18th century and was completely renovated in 2021. It stands near the hamlet of Le Bray at a crossroads of several roads and at the junction of the municipalities of Sillé-le-Guillaume, Rouessé-Vassé and Rouez.

The Église Saint-Martin was built in the 12th and 13th centuries and was later remodelled several times. It houses a 16th-century equestrian statue of Saint Martin, as well as two altarpieces donated by the parish priest Urbin de Gennetay.

The Mines de Rouez were a former gold and silver mining site; mining ended in 1997. In 1975, the largest polymetallic sulphide deposit in Europe was discovered in Sarthe, a few kilometres from Le Mans. More than two tonnes of gold and seven tonnes of silver were to be extracted from beneath Rouez-en-Champagne over a period of four years.
