The Château de Montreuil-le-Henri was listed as a historic monument on 3 June 1986. It developed from a motte castrale; stone replaced wood in the 14th century.
Culture and History
The Église Sainte Anne in Montreuil-le-Henri is a historic site and monument. It dates from the 11th century and was altered in the 15th and 18th centuries. The nave’s vault also dates from the 11th century and is covered with pointed, wood-panelled boards.
In the nave, a painted decoration from the 16th century features a figurative, heraldically decorated funerary panel; this design is considered rare and possibly unique in Sarthe. The church also contains a wooden 13th-century Christ with crossed feet. On the left wall of the nave stands a 16th-century terracotta figure of Saint Barbara.
In the vicinity of Montreuil-le-Henri lies the Château de la Flotte, a château. Also in the surrounding area is the Ancienne Abbaye de Saint-Calais (disparue), a former abbey that no longer exists. Further afield in the region are the Château de Montfort-le-Rotrou, a château, and the Abbaye de Bonlieu (Sarthe), a historic site.
Nature and Hiking
The Circuit Jéricho is a blue-marked, 15.1 km-long walking trail of the Sentier de Promenade et de Randonnée (PR) type, with a moderate difficulty level and a duration of 4 hours. Its route follows wooded paths through the Étangsort valley.
