Culture and history

The high altar reredos features a three-sided tabernacle with four twisted columns and gilded terracotta statuettes. The Vestige de litre displays two coats of arms belonging to the de Brie-Serrant family, the lords of Assé.

The priory of Assé-le-Boisne dates back to 1098, while the church of Assé-le-Boisne dates from the 13th century. The Motte Féodale dates from the late 11th century. It is what remains of the Château d'Assé, which was destroyed around 1425. The Chapelle de la Madeleine forms part of Assé-le-Boisne's architectural heritage.

The roof of the washhouse (lavoir) was renovated in the early 2000s and is now covered with slate; it has an impluvium roof.

Nature and landscape

Assé-le-Boisne is located in the Normandie-Maine Regional Nature Park. The Coteau des Vignes natural area extends across Assé-le-Boisne and Fresnay-sur-Sarthe. It has footpaths and information panels that allow walkers to discover its natural and cultural heritage. The Coteau des Vignes offers unobstructed views of the old town centre of Fresnay-sur-Sarthe.

The Butte de Folleton covers an area of 3.41 hectares in Assé-le-Boisne. The regionally protected common pasque flower (Pulsatilla vulgaris) has been recorded at the Butte de Folleton. The Butte de Folleton features xerothermic dry grasslands with flora that is remarkable for the Sarthe département.

The Sarthe and smaller watercourses shape the landscapes around Assé-le-Boisne, which feature pronounced relief, deeply incised valleys with dense woodland, as well as meadows and fields with only a weak bocage character.

The Cidre fermier des Alpes Mancelles offering provides free tastings by appointment. Organic farmhouse cider and apple juice from the Alpes Mancelles are also available in Assé-le-Boisne.
