The oldest surviving reference to Grand-Mesnil dates from 1263 and mentions the tithe of the parish of Saint-Samson and of the fief of Grand-Mesnil.

History

Dendrochronology dates the floor beams of the present-day Grand-Mesnil manor house to the years 1632 to 1634. The Grand-Mesnil estate, which formerly belonged to the municipality of Saint-Samson, was a manor house and was later used as a farm.

The Moulin-du-Grand-Mesnil mill was a grain mill in Saint-Samson; it has since disappeared. It was supplied by a large reservoir, which still holds water and was built on the Mayenne River.

Nature

Mont des Avaloirs is one of the 37 geosites of the Normandie-Maine Regional Nature Park and UNESCO Global Geopark. Nearly 4,000 different species have been recorded in the Mont des Avaloirs Regional Nature Reserve.

The family hike A LA CONQUÊTE DE L'ARMORIQUE (N°37) offers remarkable views of the Corniche de Pail, a significant heathland area.

Trails and Culture

The La Véloscénie stage begins in Pré-en-Pail-Saint-Samson, crosses the N12 and then follows a car-free route for 18 kilometres to the municipality of Rives d'Andaine.

Along the A LA CONQUÊTE DE L'ARMORIQUE (N°37) route, there are remains of woven hedges that bear witness to old farming expertise. The church of Saint-Samson contains a listed sundial with the identifier PM53000537.
