Since 1662, when Colbert brought the Parisian workshops together in one location, the Manufacture des Gobelins has been based at this shared site. Since 1826, it has used only the high-warp weaving technique. The complex also includes the Galerie des Gobelins, built between 1906 and 1913 by the architect Jean-Camille Formigé, which presents temporary exhibitions by Mobilier national.
The Galerie des Gobelins is a particularly striking Beaux-Arts building. The governments of the Third Republic designated it for the public presentation of works by French manufactories and the collections of Mobilier national. The deconsecrated Chapelle Saint-Louis des Gobelins now houses historic tapestries and contemporary works of art on the theme of the sacred.
