Culture and History

The Arc de Triomphe in Paris 08 Élysée was built between 1806 and 1830 in honour of the Grande Armée. Since 11 November 1920, it has housed the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The eternal flame at the Arc de Triomphe is rekindled every evening at 6:30 p.m.; the public Ravivage de la Flamme ceremony also takes place beneath the monument every evening at 6:30 p.m. The terrace of the Arc de Triomphe offers a unique view of the French capital’s most important monuments.

The Chapelle expiatoire stands on the site where Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette were buried in 1793. It has been classified as a Monument historique since 1914. The Grand Palais was built for the 1900 World’s Fair and has been classified as a Monument historique since 2000. As part of its visitor programme, it presents major international exhibitions; the Palais des enfants is a family-oriented visitor area within the Grand Palais.

The Pont Alexandre III was built between 1897 and 1900 as a symbol of Franco-Russian friendship. More than 17 artists were involved in its design, and the bridge was inaugurated for the 1900 World’s Fair.

Gardens and Boulevards

The Jardins des Champs-Élysées have been classified since 1910 and consist of twelve gardens or landscaped areas. Their wooded section includes statues, fountains and a bandstand.

The Champs-Élysées form a route just under two kilometres long between the Place de la Concorde and the Arc de Triomphe. Every year, they serve as the venue for major public events, including the parade on 14 July, the finish of the Tour de France and the Christmas lights. On the first Sunday of each month, the Champs-Élysées are reserved for pedestrians and cyclists.

Squares and Visitor Attractions

The Place de la Concorde forms a huge sundial with the obelisk standing at its centre. The obelisk is 22 metres high. The two fountains on the Place de la Concorde honour naval power and the Ministry of the Navy.

At the Hôtel de la Marine, a cooking demonstration with a chef from Le Cordon Bleu is offered before visiting the monument’s rooms. The Petit Palais can be reached by bus routes 28, 42, 72, 73, 80, 83 and 93.
