Culture and History
The Château du Val-d’Arques is partially protected as a historic monument. The protection covers the façades and roofs of the château, as well as five associated agricultural buildings: coach house, stable, barn, dovecote, and well. The parish church of Saint-Eustache has a bell tower dating from the 13th century. After the spire collapsed in 1489, the rest of the building was rebuilt in the 16th century. In the early 1920s, composer André Caplet composed the Mass of the Petits Chanteurs de Saint-Eustache at the Château de la Petite Croix. The present residential building of the Château de la Petite Croix was built in the third quarter of the 18th century. The Château de Saint-Eustache was built in the mid-18th century at the behest of a member of the Parliament of Rouen.
Landscape and Orientation
The RD 6015 is an important transport route in Seine-Maritime and connects Rouen with Le Havre. The Commerce Valley forms the eastern boundary of Saint-Eustache-la-Forêt.
The grounds of the Château du Val d’Arques include formal plantings, clipped lime trees, topiary yews and boxwood, a centuries-old beech grove, and collections of ornamental grasses and ferns.
