Ingouville is a rural, green seaside village bordered by tall chalk cliffs. The 195-kilometre GR 21 long-distance hiking trail runs through the village along the Côte d’Albâtre. The route passes through a landscape of tall chalk cliffs, enclosed green meadows, valleuses, beaches, villages full of character, authentic harbours and lively towns.

Ingouville has preserved the charm and picturesque character of the villages of the Pays de Caux. Cycle paths, particularly the “Voie Verte”, make it possible to travel through the green and flower-filled villages of the Pays de Caux.

Tourist circular route No. 5 around Saint-Valery-en-Caux passes through Ingouville and can be explored on foot or by bicycle or VTC.

Culture and history

Ingouville’s distinctive architectural heritage includes buildings made of regional sandstone, flint and brick. Traditional built heritage includes half-timbered houses with earth walls made from clay mixed with straw or hemp.

The Chapelle Saint-Michel and its former cemetery, which was converted into a public garden, have been a listed site since 4 May 1943. The chapel was built around 1480 from black flint and stone, replacing a Romanesque church. Until 1820, it was Ingouville’s parish church.

Victor Hugo stayed in Ingouville in 1839 and 1843 and wrote part of Les Contemplations there.

The 1503 register of fiefs of the Bailiwick of Caux records a single noble fief in the parish of Ingouville. At that time, agriculture and weaving were the main economic activities in Ingouville.
