Culture

The choir of the Église Saint-Pierre in Épretot was built in the first half of the 12th century. The bell tower dates from the 16th century. The present façade was reconstructed in 1897 by the architect Boeswillwald.

The Église Saint-Pierre contains 19th-century stained-glass windows depicting Saint Christopher. The church houses a statue of Saint Peter; it is listed as a protected object, and the listing was made on 24 March 1982.

The François bell in the Église Saint-Pierre is the second-oldest in the canton after the bell of Saint-Vigor. The church also contains a remarkable chapier with revolving drawers. A yew tree stands at the entrance.

The dovecote of Ferme Degenetais is one of the most remarkable dovecotes in the village of Épretot. When the Église Saint-Pierre is closed, the keys are held at the town hall.

History

The first surviving written mention of Épretot dates from 1114. In a charter by Guillaume de Tancarville, the place appears as “d’Espretot”.

At the beginning of the century, Épretot was one of the first 20 French municipalities whose wheat yield exceeded 100 decitonnes per hectare.

Geographical setting

Épretot lies halfway between Le Havre and Bolbec. The Église Saint-Pierre is a remarkable religious and funerary site on the Le Grénesé circular route. Due to its location, Épretot serves as a stopover destination.
