Sainte-Marguerite-de-Carrouges: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

At the heart of Sainte-Marguerite-de-Carrouges stands the Église Sainte-Marguerite, whose construction history is unusually long: the nave dates from the 11th century, the transept from the 15th century, the choir from 1680 and the chapels from 1648.

The church’s older form includes a Romanesque west façade with a granite portal and a double archivolt. In 1380, the wedding of Jean de Carrouges and Marguerite de Thibouville took place here.

Inside is an 18th-century altarpiece ensemble. It includes an altar, a tabernacle, a statue of Saint Nicholas, and two paintings depicting the Holy Trinity and Saint Francis of Assisi. The statue of Saint Nicholas dates from the 19th century.

The Église Sainte-Marguerite was listed as a Monument historique by decree of 29 December 1978.

Culture and townscape

There are a total of six calvaries in Sainte-Marguerite-de-Carrouges. They are located in the town centre and in the hamlets. The first calvary is situated on the church square, and the second in La Croix on Rue de l’Eglise.

The fourth calvary stands at the intersection of Rue des Étangs and Route du Joué-du-Bois. The fifth is located at the intersection of Route du Ménil-Scelleur and Impasse de la Normandière.

At the former blast furnace and foundry site of Le Fourneau, workers’ housing and the foreman’s accommodation have been preserved.

Sainte-Marguerite-de-Carrouges is part of the Normandie-Maine Regional Natural Park.

The Ferme cidricole Hugues Desfriéches produces organic cider, poiré in the process of conversion to organic production, organic Pommeau de Normandie aged for more than five years, white eaux-de-vie, AOC Calvados aged for up to 40 years, organic apple juice, organic pear juice and apple-pear juice, as well as organic cider vinegar.

The Ferme cidricole Hugues Desfriéches has 10 hectares of organic apple trees and 3 hectares of pear trees in the process of conversion to organic production.
