At the Goult Priory, the six capitals and the columns supporting them date from the 12th century. Their design is characteristic of early 12th-century Norman architecture.
Culture and history
The former chapel of the Goult Priory was rebuilt in the 18th century. The Romanesque portal was reassembled on the west façade.
The Chapel of Saint Michael is located along the so-called chemins mantois, which pilgrims used throughout the Middle Ages on their way to Mont Saint-Michel. The Chapel of Saint Michael was affected by the Wars of Religion and the French Revolution.
The Bois de Goult was heavily exploited in the 18th and 19th centuries to meet the high demand of local forges and glassworks.
Nature and trails
The history of the forest has had a strong influence on the landscape of the Bois de Goult.
The Petits Riaux are a typical peat bog of the Armorican Massif and lie in the heart of the Écouves Forest. They are characterised by acidic, water-saturated soil, with spongy cushions formed by sphagnum mosses and small carnivorous plants.
At the Petits Riaux, there is a marked educational trail that is open all year round and is 1,400 metres long. Guided tours of the Petits Riaux are offered by the Normandie-Maine Regional Natural Park.
The long-distance GR 36 trail passes through La Lande-de-Goult after following the Cance Valley, and then continues through the Écouves Forest. The car park for the Petits Riaux is located in the hamlet of Goult in La Lande-de-Goult.
